Will?Home Insurance?Cover Cleanup After a Fire

Fires are devastating events for all homes. Even a small fire can create significant structural damage to your home. But, the worst aspect is the cleanup after firefighters step in to put the fire out. The water damage can be severe. Your home insurance can help cover some of these financial losses for you. In some cases, the entire incident has protection. However, not all fires have coverage. And water damage is not always a policy coverage. Here’s what you need to know.

What Caused the Fire?

Most home insurance policies cover fire and water damage from unpreventable and unavoidable incidents. This includes things like a wiring problem behind the walls. It also includes things like cooking accidents. It does not cover normal wear and tear concerns. This includes things like damage to stoves. It also does not cover damage related to poor maintenance. If your furnace caught fire due to poor maintenance, you may not have coverage.

Your insurer will determine the underlying cause of the fire. They work with the fire marshal to do so. Once this happens, they can then make decisions about coverage. Modern house

When Coverage Is Available

In some situations, you may have home insurance coverage. When this happens, the agent then goes to work to help you. They will do the following:

  • They will get an estimate from a local contractor to make repairs.

  • They will get estimates for the cleanup work, too. This includes hauling away materials.

  • They will work to provide funds to replace items lost due to the fire.

  • In extensive events, they may cover your costs to live outside the home.

Home insurance generally covers the removal of debris, cleanup, and steps taken to cut mold growth. It also covers the cost to rebuild these areas. However, you remain in control over who does the work for you. Be sure the company you hire has proper licensing and the tools necessary to ensure the work will get complete as desired.

As the team comes in to put out a fire, do not worry. Your home insurance company is there to help you. They work hand-in-hand with you throughout this recovery process. And, their job is to ensure your home is in good, safe condition again. They want you to have the home you had before the incident occurred.
