Protecting Your Valuables During a Flood

Anything touched by floodwaters has the potential to be ruined. Your clothing may be perfectly replaceable. But what about your family photo albums, all of the files on your computer and important documents — such as car titles and birth certificates? You’ll need to keep these somewhere safe when a flood is predicted and you can take action in time.  Flooding from a hurricane

The best thing you can do to protect valuables is to remove them from your home if you have enough advance warning. If not, there are several techniques you can employ to reduce the chances of irreversible water damage. First, it’s important to note that items in your basement and/or first story are most susceptible to damages. So if you can’t remove items from your home, you can move them to the second story or, at the very least, a high shelf or cabinet.

Any furniture that cannot be moved in time should be covered in plastic to help keep most of the water away. Again, address furniture on lower levels first, as those pieces are the most likely to become victims of flood damage.

Electronics should be disconnected from power supplies and stored in sealable plastic bags. For even more protection, put the bagged items into an airtight container. Then move all electronics to higher ground. This goes for computers, game consoles, phones, TVs and any other electronics that you wish to protect.

Important documents, photos and other paper items need special protection as well. You probably already have a safe for valuables. Consider replacing it with a waterproof, fireproof safe so you can keep your stuff safe no matter what. You can even store these items in plastic bags inside of the safe for optimal protection.

We’ve got you covered. Call Esplanade Insurance Agency Inc for more information on flood insurance.
