Flood Preparation 101

Floodwater can be extremely destructive; even a few inches of water can ruin your flooring, walls and furniture. Even worse, floods can happen anywhere at a moment’s notice. But there are certain conditions that make floods more predictable. If a flood is predicted in your area, take the opportunity to prepare in advance to reduce the amount of damage your home is likely to sustain. flood

Home Inventory
Many insurance providers will want to see some sort of proof of your belongings so they know how much to reimburse you for after flood damage is sustained. Create a home inventory to document all of your valued possessions and their worth, along with pictures. Keep your inventory (which is also helpful for home insurance claims) somewhere safe like on a cloud drive or in a safety deposit box.

Remove Valuables
If you have a few days’ notice, remove valuable items that could get damaged. Start with priceless family heirlooms and photo albums that cannot be replaced. You may also wish to remove furniture, carpeting and other objects that are low to the ground. You can rent a storage unit or store your stuff with a friend outside of the projected flood area.

Prepare Electronics and Appliances
Unplug all electronics and move them to higher cabinets or shelves when possible. Large appliances (fridges, washing machines and the like) should be turned off and unplugged; you may also wish to raise them up on cinder blocks above the projected flood level. Turn off the water, gas and electricity before evacuating.

Pack Supplies
If a flood is coming and the area is being evacuated, take a moment to gather up some essentials. You should pack enough supplies to get your family, including pets, through a few days. Bring non-perishable food, fresh water, first aid supplies, cell phones with chargers, flashlights with extra batteries, prescription medications, blankets, extra clothing, hygiene products and important documents like a copy of your flood insurance policy in a waterproof container.

Make sure you’re covered before disaster strikes. Call Esplanade Insurance Agency at 504-273-1500 for more information on Esplanade flood insurance.
